About Stigmina/SNEED Needlecast
A fungal disease of spruce very similar in appearance to Rhizosphaera needlecast but caused by a different fungus. Often occurs alongside Rhizosphaera. It has become increasingly recognized as a major cause of spruce needle loss, particularly on Colorado blue spruce. Diagnosis requires microscopic examination to distinguish from Rhizosphaera.
Symptoms to watch for
Purple-brown to black discoloration of needles, premature needle drop from lower and inner branches progressing upward, rows of dark fruiting bodies on needles (slightly different pattern than Rhizosphaera under magnification), progressive thinning of canopy over multiple years, second-year and older needles most affected

Treatment options
Fungicide Application
Similar treatment to Rhizosphaera: apply chlorothalonil or copper-based fungicide in spring when new growth is emerging. Two applications 3-4 weeks apart, repeated annually for 2-3 years.
Species Replacement
In cases of severe chronic infection, consider replacing Colorado blue spruce with more resistant species such as Norway spruce, Serbian spruce, or native conifers better adapted to the site.
